The University of Western Macedonia collaborates with Huawei multinational company

On Monday 13th December, at the Senate Room of the University of Western Macedonia, the Rector, Professor Theodoros Theodoulidis, and the EVP of Huawei South Balkan Region, Chen Qingwei, signed the participation of UoWM in the international programme “Huawei ICT Academy”. The particular programme is implemented through the Telecommunication Networks and Advanced Services Laboratory of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, under the direction of Assoc. Professor Malamati Louta.

In his welcome, the Rector of UOWM noted that the signing of the memorandum is a first step and the University anticipates future collaborations, not only with Huawei, but with other technological companies as well, in order to enhance the transfer of technical knowledge to the region of Western Macedonia.

Mr Chen. referred to the innovations being developed in UOWM and mentioned that during his short visit in the city of Kozani, he realized that there are many possibilities for more collaborations, not only within the framework of ICT Huawei Academy, but also in the field of Green Energy and the Innovation Zone. He noted that Huawei, together with the University of Western Macedonia, can bridge the gap between students and the needs of the industry. He also stated that the creation of ICT Academy is a significant first sample of the determination and the devotion of Huawei to the goal of jointly cultivating talents in the field of ICT, through partnerships.

Huawei, global leader and provider of Information Communication Technologies (ICT) infrastructure and smart devices, offers integrated solutions in four domains: telecommunication networks, information technology, smart devices and cloud services. The University of Western Macedonia is one of the first Higher Education Institutions in Greece that Huawei collaborates with, in this way strengthening its connection with the industry and the job market.

The Telecommunication Networks and Advanced Services Laboratory (TELNAS) of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the University of Western Macedonia focuses on the introduction of intelligence, cognition and adaptability possibilities in telecommunication and computer networks and services, as well as the extraction of knowledge and its transformation into customized information, providing solutions for complex problems in various domains.

The Huawei ICT Academy initiative is a non-profit partnership of Huawei with educational institutions all over the world and aims to provide knowledge, skills development and student certificate\ion, that have instant value in the industry and job market. The programme was established in 2015, it is led by Huawei and implemented through an extended international network of Academies and professors-students.

Through the academy, the University students have the opportunity to attend courses, as well as to participate in respective certification examinations. The training is offered cost-free and focuses on specialized and rapidly developing fields that are relevant to the University’s subject areas, like Artificial Intelligence (ΑΙ), Internet of Things (IoT), Cloud Computing Infrastructure, Big Data Management, Wireless Networks, Information Systems Security, 5G technologies, Data Communications (Routing and Switching).

Students will have access in modern technologies, modern industrial equipment and simulation tools for ICT industry and they will receive extensive theoretical and practical training with online – offline classes, as well as additional educational material. For their participation in Huawei’s certification examinations for the taught subjects, they will be given a discount coupon or even the opportunity to participate free of charge.

Furthermore, through the academy, the students will be able to participate in international competitions, like ICT competition, held every year by Huawei, competing for respective distinctions. Depending on their performance, they will receive opportunities for employment and / or scholarships from Huawei.

Another aim of Huawei ICT Academy is to give prominence to talented students for the digital transformation of enterprises. Through the ICT Tallent Alliance Job Fair initiative, organized through this programme, Huawei ICT Academy accomplishes direct interconnection between students and enterprises operating in the field of ICT.
