The establishment of a joint research centre called “Greece and Eastern Mediterranean Research Center (GEMRC)” was signed online by the Rector of the University of Western Macedonia, Professor Theodoros Theodoulidis, and the Director of the Department of International Relations of China Three Gorges University (CTGU), Dr. XI Jing.
Through the joint research centre GEMRC, the two institutions collaborate for the development of academic and educational cooperation in scientific research, staff training, the strengthening of cultural exchanges and the elaboration of joint educational and research programmes. Initially, the GEMRC will operate in China and will be based in Hubei Province, while in the second year it is planned to operate at the facilities of the University of Western Macedonia.
The agreement for the establishment of the joint research centre is subsequent to the Memorandum of Understanding that was signed between the two universities at the beginning of the year, with the Department of Mechanical Engineering of UOWM as the leading department. The two universities are already making the necessary arrangements for the UOWM to receive students from China to study in Greece for an academic semester. Within the framework of this cooperation, the Chinese University offers UOWM students scholarships for tuition-free postgraduate studies in Master of Public Administration and International Relations programmes.
This cooperation is part of the actions undertaken to enhance the extroversion and internationalization of UOWM and it is taking place at a time when the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs, in cooperation with the China Education Association for International Exchange (CEAIE), the national body for educational internationalization of the People’s Republic of China, promote the collaboration between the universities of the two countries.
