The Tyφoon MotoRacing Team UoWM is a prime example of the practical application of mechanical engineering education at the University of Western Macedonia.
Through interdisciplinary collaboration, students of the Department of Mechanical Engineering designed, developed and constructed a complete racing motorcycle, applying principles of mechanical engineering, aerodynamics, design, materials and innovation in practice.
The team travelled to Aragon, Spain, to participate in the international student competition MotoStudent 2025, where universities from around the world are invited to design and present a fully functional Moto3-type racing motorcycle.
The competition combines elements of research and development, technical documentation, business planning and racing tests, providing participants with applied engineering experience.
The Tyφoon MotoRacing Team UoWM achieved 8th place globally among 32 participating teams.
With methodical work, creativity and expertise, the team met the high standards of the competition and earned notable scores in multiple categories, including:
- P3 – Best Design
- P3 – 4th Milestone: Prototype, CAD & Drawings
- P2 – 7th Milestone: Final Presentation
- P4 – 2nd Milestone: Product Definition
- P4 – Best MS1
- P4 – 1st Milestone: Team Plan
- P5 – Best Innovation
- P7 – 5th Milestone: Economical Plan
In the dynamic racing events, the new motorcycle, Sφinx, was tested under real track conditions, providing the team with valuable data for its future development. Tyφoon advanced to the grand final, where the rider improved from P15 to P9, demonstrating team cohesion and technical readiness.
The team’s journey from the laboratories of the University of Western Macedonia to the Aragon racetrack was a rich learning experience, full of collaboration, effort and growth. Their participation highlights how the educational process can be creatively linked with research and technological applications.
