A major accessibility infrastructure project has commenced at the University of Western Macedonia, aiming to create an open and inclusive environment for all students and members of the academic community. Funded by the European Regional Development Fund, the initiative titled “Improvement of accessibility and equal access to education for students with disabilities and special educational needs” has been included in the Operational Programme “Western Macedonia 2021–2027” of the NSRF.
Following a detailed technical justification and needs assessment by the University’s Facilities Management, an adjustment to the initial budget was approved, increasing it by 20%. The total budget now stands at €1.440.000, enabling full implementation of the project across all university campuses (Kozani, Kastoria, Florina, Ptolemaida, Grevena), with a projected completion date in 2029.
The project will bring tangible improvements to the daily life of the academic community, including the construction and upgrade of ramps, installation of elevators and platform lifts, enhancement of signage and orientation with visual, tactile and digital means, creation of accessible rooms in student dormitories, renovation or construction of accessible restrooms, designated seating in lecture halls, libraries and cafeterias, as well as fully accessible service counters at administrative offices.
The Rector of the University of Western Macedonia, Professor Theodoros Theodoulidis, emphasized the importance of the project for the academic community:
“We are creating conditions that allow all students to participate equally in academic life, regardless of disability or special educational needs. We prioritize interventions that directly affect daily life, such as the accessibility project, because they shape the experience of our students. Our strategy combines landmark projects that transform the University’s image with meaningful measures to ensure equal participation in academic life for all.”
The Regional Governor of Western Macedonia, Giorgos Amanatidis, also highlighted the collaboration with the University and the comprehensive nature of the interventions:
“We are making comprehensive improvements to the University of Western Macedonia’s facilities, ensuring uninterrupted and equal access for all students, faculty and staff. We are creating the conditions for an educational community and environment in which everyone can thrive, without discrimination or exclusion. At the same time, in cooperation with the University’s Rectorate Authorities, we plan and implement projects and initiatives that enhance the University of Western Macedonia, making it a leading and attractive institution for both students and faculty.”
