The Summer School titled “Electricity Generation and Transition to a Green Future,” organized by the University of Western Macedonia, has been successfully completed, marking yet another milestone in its international journey.
Twenty undergraduate students from the Department of Electrical Engineering at China Three Gorges University, accompanied by two professors, were hosted at the University’s facilities in ZEP, Kozani, from 6 to 12 July 2025. This is the first time that UOWM implemented such a programme, further strengthening its strategic partnership with one of China’s leading universities.
The Summer School represents the second phase of a collaboration launched in 2024, aiming to foster academic connections, transfer expertise and build “bridges” between the two universities in the critical field of energy.
The programme combined scientific lectures, site visits to energy facilities and group projects, showcasing the University of Western Macedonia as a hub of knowledge and innovation in energy transition.
At the opening session of the Summer School, students were welcomed by the Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation, Professor Stergios Maropoulos. The scientific coordinator, Professor George Christoforidis of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, emphasized that “this collaboration reflects the international orientation of the University of Western Macedonia and its active participation in the dialogue on energy and developmental transition. The feedback we received has been particularly encouraging, inspiring us to pursue even more ambitious initiatives.”
Furthermore, the academic coordinator, Assistant Professor Alkiviadis Tsamis of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, stated that “such initiatives contribute significantly to linking academic knowledge with industry needs—an aspect of particular importance when it comes to critical sectors such as energy and sustainable development.”
It is worth noting that the foundations have already been laid for further collaboration between the two universities, including the development of joint PhD programmes, student and staff exchanges and the enhancement of the Summer School initiative, which aspires to become a reference point in the coming years.
The success of the Summer School highlights the dynamic growth and international standing of the University of Western Macedonia, which consistently invests in high-level partnerships, further enhancing its position within the global academic community.
