The new supercomputer in Western Macedonia – a tool of research, technology and development

News

The first AI-optimized supercomputer, with a budget of €30 million, will be installed at the under-construction Green Data Center of the University of Western Macedonia in Kozani, placing the region of Western Macedonia on the European map of artificial intelligence and high-performance computing. Beyond cutting-edge technology, the project represents something far greater: the creation of a tool of innovation and collaboration that will enhance research, entrepreneurship and the region’s sustainable transition.

The new supercomputer, unique in Greece with a specialization in Artificial Intelligence, is part of the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking, a European initiative for the development of supercomputers across Europe.  Its implementation is coordinated by GRNET S.A., an entity under the Ministry of Digital Governance, in collaboration with the University of Western Macedonia. It is funded from national resources with the support of the Ministry of Digital Governance, the Ministry of National Economy and Finance and the Region of Western Macedonia.

The University is taking on a central role in the European research and technology landscape, strengthening the connection between education, innovation, and green development. Students and researchers will have the opportunity to utilize advanced technologies and develop cutting-edge applications in collaboration with universities and institutions in Greece and abroad. At the same time, local businesses will gain access to capabilities that, until now, were only available in major international centres.
