The Region of Western Macedonia is located at the north-western part of Greece and borders on Albania and the FYROM. It is consisted of the Prefectures of Kozani, Grevena, Kastoria and Florina and the city of Kozani, is the Capital of the region and the homonym Prefecture.

Western Macedonia extents in an area of 9.451 km222 and occupies the 7,2% of the total extent of the country. It is a mountainous region, with the 82% of the ground covered by mountainous and semi-mountainous areas. The region of West Macedonia has important natural resources such as energy minerals ores, forests (50% of her total extent), pasture lands and the 65% of the country's surface aquatic resources of country.


According to facts of the Greek National Statictical Organization, in 1991 (official and complete facts), the population of Western Macedonia amounts in 293.015 residents and corresponds to the 2,9% of the total population of the country. The growth rate of the population in the period of 1993-1998 was 1,66%, and it was slightly bigger than the corresponding increase in Greece's national population (in percentage 1,56%).

The urban centres of Region, according to the cansus of 1991, are Kozani (32.010 inhabitants), Ptolemaida (25.195 inhabitants), Kastoria (15.710 inhabitants) Florina (12.622 inhabitants), while Grevena, the capital of homonym prefecture, has a population of 9.619 inhabitants.

Perfecture of Kozani

The capital of the prefecture of Kozani is the city of Kozani. The prefecture holds 1.4% the country's total population with a significant growth potential, since it had the 7th higher growth rate of its population in 1999 (birth supremacy/1.000 residents 1,2) and high ratio of marriages per 1.000 redidents (5,4 when the average ratio for the country is 5,1). Between the census of 1991 and 2001 (according to the current official data for the 2001 cencus, provided by the Greek National Statistical Organisation), the population of the prefecture was increased by 3,3%, an increase which was lower than that of the whole country (6,9%).

Perfecture of Grevena

The capital of the prefecture is the city of Grevena. The prefecture holds 0,3% of the country;s total population, while it presents a reduction tendency, since there is a natural reduction of the population (birth supremacy/1.000 residents: -4,7% in 1998 and -3,1 in 1999). Between the census of 1991 and 2001, the population of the prefecture was increased by 3,2% (according to the current official for 2001, provided by the Greek National Statistical Organisation).

Perfecture of Kastoria

The capital of the prefecture is the city of Kastoria. The prefecture holds 0,5% of the country's total population, while it presents a reduction tendency, since there is a natural reduction of the population (birth supremacy/1.000 residents: -0,7%).
Between the cencus of 1991 and 2001 the population of the prefecture was increased by 1,5%, (faccording to the current official for 2001, provided by the Greek National Statistical Organization).

Perfecture of Florina

The capital of the prefecture is the city of Florina. The prefecture holds 0,5% of the country;s total population, while it presents a reduction tendency, since there is a natural reduction of the population (birth supremacy/1.000 residents: -0,8% in 1996 and -0,2 in 1999). Between the census of 1991 and 2001, the population of the prefecture was increased by 3,1% (according to the current official for 2001, provided by the ).
