In 2002 the Ministerial Council under the Prime Minister Mr. Kostas Simitis decided the foundation of the University of Western Macedonia, and published the decree-law No. 92/11-4-2003. In June 2003 the Minister of Education and Religious Affairs, Mr Petros Eythymiou throughout the Φ.120.61/132/61865/Β2/25.6.2003 decision appoints the members of the Administrative Committee. On 28 July 2003 a group of ministers leaded by the Minister of Education and Religious Affairs Petros Eythymiou settles the Administrative Committee in Kozani.

Today the University of Western Macedonia has completed a significant part of its Administrative Structure and is in contact with distinguished academics for the composition of a 5 year strategic planning.
